Collaborative Violin Making: Anthony & Iris

Anthony and Iris met at the Newark School of Violinmaking in 1994 where they both trained as professional Violinmakers. Iris was one year ahead of Tony and graduated in 1996, followed by a move to London to take up the offer of a rare position as a restorer at the world-renowned J & A Beare Shop in London where she got to see and work on many fine instruments.

After setting up her own business in 2004 in Suffolk, Iris continued with major restoration projects for dealers and musicians around the world and also started to teach regularly, giving courses in restoration work and retouching.

It’s only in recent years Iris has come back to doing some making, using her extensive experience in seeing and working on many of the best Cremonese instruments. Iris now works on collaborations with her husband who makes and varnishes the instruments and Iris then takes over to do the antiquing as well as the set-up. Their instruments are available directly from their workshop in Suffolk as well as London Violindealers Sean Bishop and My Luthier.
