The key to getting these areas that had unfortunately been stripped and over-varnished to look right, was to fade the colour across from the hard grain to the soft grain rather than just giving the whole area a “wash” with the matching colour.
Working horizontally to accentuate the medullary rays with lighter areas in between as well as along the grain lines.
