A tricky lower bout violin rib restoration with missing wood. Thanks for your help Andrew Fairfax and Eliane Leblanc! 🙏
- Wooden cast of the rib.
- Feathering down to the edges of the hole.
- Pressing through a 0.2mm shaving matching the slab-cut original wood to just cover the hole.
- Chalk-fitting a piece of rib wood of around 2mm over the area using clamps for positioning the piece when fitting it.
- Doubling the rib in that area as it’s the chinrest area for structural strength, finishing the rib with standard thickness.
- A little wood filler was required along the cracks, then staining, filler varnish, scraping and retouching.

Another violin saved, Dr. Carr!
