I find ribstructure work among one of the most challenging in restoration procedures.
In this instance, the whole of the ribstructure and back had twisted quite badly but the main problem was, that the front had been pulled down in the C’s, distorting the arching of the central area of the front which didn’t just affect the look of it but had quite a negative impact on the sound.

Sometimes, when the wood has been stained and there is no original varnish left, it pays to clean the area as well as possible before applying new retouch to get the best possible outcome.
A few water drops left unnoticed sitting on a front can soften the varnish underneath and when wiped off eventually, the top layer of the varnish has been removed and little shallow craters remain.
