
Some overeager cleaning on this violin unfortunately removed some of the original varnish and the violin was dropped off with me to rectify the problem.
What the photos don’t show is the texture which always takes a lot more time to get right than the colour. When the light reflects off the surface, the bare areas sit lower than the rest, so need to be at the same level to correspond with the same colour.
In this case, I built the areas up with my clear retouch varnish first – luckily the original varnish wasn’t too thick.
